The Italian Renaissance began in Florence, the third largest city in Europe at the time. The wealthy people of Florence became supporters of artists, causing the city to become the "cultural center of Europe". With the support of the wealthy, these artists could spend their time travelling, studying and rediscovering. Artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and scientists like Galileo created names for themselves during this time.
