Primarily between Samoans fighting over who would be King of Samoa, the German military intervened on several occasions. Tensions heightened with the United States after a German shelling of rebel villages also resulted in destruction of American owned property in 1887.
Hostilities rose when the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany found themselves in a three way standoff in 1889. Eventually the three powers agreed to diplomatically sort out the dispute and the Islands were partitioned.
Germany was granted the western two islands and the US was granted the remainder. The United Kingdom gave up their claims in exchange for removal of German claims to Zanzibar
