Iran-Iraq War (1 sett 1980 anni – 1 agos 1988 anni)
Descrizione:
Remember the Shatt al-Arab conflict? Its back!
Warring factions: Mostly Iran vs Iraq
Location: Iran/Iraq
Note: This fight was a part of the Cold War. Iraq was afraid Ruhollah Khomeini would export the new Iranian ideology to Iraq. Also, after the fall of Pahlavi, a leader who was very close to Israel and the United States, Iraq saw the potential to seize power in the Gulf. Iraq also wanted to reclaim power over the Shatt al-Arab, since Iran had been undermining the Algiers Accord.
Support: Iraq was funded primarily by the Gulf States, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE. There was also a scandal concerning Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, whose American branch reportedly sent $5 billion to Iraq. The United States officially sided with Iraq, sending several billion dollars of economic aid, selling dual-use technology estimated at around $500 million, and non U.S.-origin military intelligence and weaponry. Iran received “$30 million” from the US in return for American hostages captured in Lebanon. However, this would become known as the Iran-Contra affair, as $18 million of that $30 million would be sent to a rebellion group in Nicaragua called the “Contras.” North Korea, Israel, Syria, and China all provided arms and military equipment, with China being the largest of the group. Syria and Libya would be especially notable, since their support of Iran broke Arab solidarity. Yugoslavia, Spain and Portugal all sold arms to both countries. Turkey, while not supplying aid in any military way, did profit greatly from civilian trade on both sides.
