Description: Armed conflict primarily between the Polisario Front, an independence movement, and Morocco. It began after Spain withdrew from its colony and agreed to transfer control to Morocco and Mauritania, which led the Polisario Front, with backing from Algeria, to fight for an independent Sahrawi state. Mauritania withdrew in 1979, but the war continued between the Polisario and Morocco until a ceasefire in 1991. The conflict left hundreds of thousands of Sahrawi refugees displaced, and resulted in the SADR leadership being exiled with symbolic control of little land.
