Description:
The Yemeni Civil War is a conflict between the Houthi movement - backed by Iran - and Yemen - backed by a Saudi-led coalition supported by the U.S. After the Houthis took Sana’a and significant territory in northern Yemen, the Saudi-led coalition launched a military campaign in 2015. The South Transitional Council, backed by the UAE, took control of Aden. This war has been joined by Al-Qaeda and ISIS. There have been over 150 000 killed in combat and other civilians devastated by famine and disease. Despite UN-brokered truces and a Saudi-Iran détente in 2023, both sides continue to receive external military support, prolonging the war and leaving Yemen in a state of humanitarian catastrophe.
