Description:

The 1948 Arab-Israeli War was the second part of the overall 1948 Palestine War. It erupted after the United Nations adopted the Partition Plan for Palestine, in which then-Mandatory Palestine would be separated into a Jewish state and an Arab state with some important cities holding some type of shared, internationalized status. In the context of an ethnocultural-nationalist Zionism of the period, many Jewish people from Europe immigrated to the region the nation of Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948 - officially rendering this an inter-state conflict. While Israel considers this to be a War of Independence, it is known in the Arab world as the ‘Naqba’ - catastrophe due to the forced displacement of many Palestinians. Palestinian Arabs were forced to relocate to the Gaza Strip, to the West Bank (the newly established borders from the Partition Plan) or to one of many other countries in the region such as Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt in a refugee crisis. The end of the conflict was marked by a UN-brokered ceasefire and a subsequent set of armistices between Israel and each of the Arab League nations with whom Israel shared a border.
