First Gulf War (2 agos 1990 anni – 28 feb 1991 anni)

Descrizione:

On August 2, 1990, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein lead his army in an invasion of Kuwait, an oil-rich nation. The UN quickly demanded Hussein to withdraw, and promptly placed economic sanctions on Iraq once he refused. Subsequently, the UN called on its members against Iraq, just as they had previously against North Korea. Coalition forces began efforts to drive away Iraqi troops in January 1991. It was a successful mission with few casualties, accomplished by February 27 of the same year.

Prime Minister Mulroney's government contributed destroyers, fighter jets, military personnel, a supply ship, and a field hospital -- a relatively small contribution. Canada's involvement in the war was heavily debated, but did follow through because of the nations' commitment to the UN.

The Gulf War was the first to disrupt the short period of peace following the Cold War. After it was over, President George H. W. Bush ensured the UN was a more active peacemaking force in order to sustain a "new world order" -- if necessary, military would be utilized.
