The Vietnam War began as the US began supplying not only advisers and economic aid, but troops, to South Vietnam in order to protect them from the communist North; they believed if the South was consumed by communism, the same would happen to the rest of Asia, and democracy would be threatened. As the US sent troops to the South, the Soviet Union and China did the same for the North, and war began.

Canada decided to stay neutral in this battle, though many Canadians voluntarily enlisted with the American military to help the cause. To Prime Minister Pearson, peace was the most crucial thing to achieve, and he believed the war went against that. He even suggested the prevention of certain bombing campaigns to President Lyndon Johnson, though Johnson refused to listen. As Pearson expected, Johnson’s aggression only resulted in the death of more troops with little overall progression in the war. Hope only became apparent when Richard Nixon replaced Johnson in office in 1969, as he pulled troops out of Southeast Asia. The process of removal began in 1972, and ended in 1973. Vietnam was quickly unified under communism following this, when the North Vietnam army quickly defeated the small South Vietnam army.
