Sojourner Truth (4 lugl 1797 anni – 26 nov 1883 anni)
Descrizione:
Sojourner Truth (c. 1797–1883) was an African American abolitionist and women’s rights activist who escaped from slavery and became known for her stirring speeches, such as "Ain’t I a Woman?" She embodied the intersection of abolitionism and early feminism, traveling widely to speak about racial and gender equality.
Sojourner Truth was born Isabella Baumfree in the Dutch-speaking community of Swartekill, Ulster County, New York. She was sold at least four times, endured harsh work from childhood on, and by her mid-teens had borne five children under slavery. In 1827, one year before New York’s gradual emancipation, Isabella escaped with her youngest child to freedom with the help of the Van Wagener family. The following year she successfully sued in New York court to recover her son Peter—becoming the first Black woman to win such a suit against a white man.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Truth worked tirelessly as a recruiter for Black Union regiments and later served with the National Freedman’s Relief Association to aid formerly enslaved people.
