Daniel 11:20 (1 lugl 187 anni a. C. – 31 dic 175 anni a. C.)

Descrizione:

Dan 11:20  Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.

Seleucus IV Philopator (reigned 187–175 BCE):
After the death of Antiochus III, his son Seleucus IV Philopator took the throne.

Seleucus IV is mentioned in this verse as the one who sent an exactor of tribute. This refers to his efforts to raise funds to pay the massive tribute required by the Romans after the Treaty of Apamea (188 BCE).

To fulfill the terms of the treaty, Seleucus IV imposed heavy taxes on his subjects, including the Jews, leading to significant economic strain across the empire.

The Exactor of Tribute:
Seleucus IV sent Heliodorus to Jerusalem to seize treasures from the Temple of Jerusalem, which was part of his efforts to raise the tribute.

This action led to great tensions with the Jewish community, and some Jewish leaders began to rebel against his policies. This taxation further strained his already unstable reign.

The "Few Days" and His Downfall:
Seleucus IV’s reign was short-lived—he ruled for just 12 years (187–175 BCE).

His rule was marked by financial pressures due to the tribute to Rome and internal strife.

Seleucus IV was assassinated by his minister Heliodorus, likely in a plot to gain control of the throne. The prophecy that Seleucus would be "broken" "neither in anger nor in battle" is fulfilled in this assassination. He wasn’t overthrown by an external force or in a war; instead, he was quietly murdered by a trusted official.

Antiochus IV Epiphanes Takes the Throne:
After Seleucus IV’s death, his son Demetrius I Soter should have been the rightful heir. However, at the time, Demetrius was held hostage in Rome due to the Roman policy of keeping royal family members as hostages to ensure peace.

This allowed Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the younger brother of Seleucus IV, to take the throne in 175 BCE.

Antiochus IV’s rise to power marked a dramatic shift in the Seleucid dynasty, as he would later become notorious for his harsh and blasphemous treatment of the Jewish people.
