The first pope to effectively use military power, either directly or through a king or other secular ruler, to spread or protect the influence of the papacy was Pope Gregory I (also known as Gregory the Great, 590–604 AD). While earlier popes had exercised influence through diplomacy, religious authority, or theological means, Gregory I was the first pope to wield military or political power in a more direct and influential way.
