This campaign was to combat capitalistic tendencies that Mao claimed to have penetrated even the highest levels of the Communist Party. This included healthcare and education to reinvigorate attempts at rural industrialization. Mao struggled to overcome there inequalities and created a different form of modernization than the soviets. The Cultural Revolution included the Red Guards (public rather than close like Stalin's), who were students who lead mass movements under Mao. These people attempted to remove capitalists. The attacked were sent to "learn from peasants," while others were humiliated, beaten, or killed.
