In the USA African slaves were forced to work for free in extreme conditions. Slavery was important for the economy, especially in the South. They often worked on plantations collecting cotton, tobacco and sugar. Many slaves faced bad living conditions, violence and were considered as property that had no rights. African families were often split and they had to fight for their respect and human rights. In the early 17th century, the Northern states abolished slavery. This lead to a conflict between the Northern and Southern states, which ended in a civil war that the Northern states won. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln made a law that stated that no one could own another person, and thereby abolishing slavery. The southern states were forced to sign this law, which made all slaves free.

There was slavery in the USA, because they needed more workforce for the plantations. It was difficult to automate the work at the plantations, which is why they needed cheap labor to work there.
