A public meeting was held in Jallianwala Bagh where protesters gathered to demonstrate peacefully against arrest. Jallianwala bagh was a large ground surrounded by building with only one exit. On hearing about the demonstration, General Gyer, the british military commander, ordered the only exit of the park to be sealed. He then ordered the unarmed protesters to be fired upon. Hundreds of people were killed in the tragedy. Martial law was proclaimed in Punjab. There was great public outrage which lead to several strikes and clashes with the police. Rabidranath Tagore gave up his knighthood which had been awarded by th british crown in protest of the situation.
