Victor Emmanuel II was the king of Sardinia. He ruled at this position until the Italian unification, which is when he assumed the role as the King of Italy. He was the first ruler of a United Italy, and was considered the "Father of the Fatherland". Overall, Victor was a prominent Politician. He appointed Camillo Benso as his prime minister, and aided French and British troops in the crimean war. He also allied himself with Napoleon III of france, which gained france's help in the second italian war of independence, which freed Lombardy from austrian rule.
