First Sino-Japanese War (Treaty of Shimonoseiki) - 1894-95 (1 gen 1894 anni – 1 gen 1895 anni)
Descrizione:
The First Sino-Japanese War was caused by a direct result of the rising tensions between Japan and China on the issue of the Treaty of Ganghwa islands. This tension arose into an armed conflict, which the Japanese ultimately won.
1) Japan, after winning the Sino-Japanese war through their more advanced military, wanted to ensure that the treaty signed after the war would subvert the traditional power balance in Asia, and place Japan at its head. In terms of what they wanted from the conflict, it was the spoils of war -Reparations, influence, and more territory.
2) The war was wonderful for Japan. Not only did they receive massive reparations from China, they received control of Korea, Manchuria, and Taiwan: a Japanese empire. Korea was made fully independent from China, Japan was granted Taiwan and the Liaodong Peninsula, and was permitted to use the Yangtze river and control four ports for imports. Japan was able to instill an incredible amount of nationalism within its people, as it had beaten a foe who was 25x bigger(both population and land mass). Because of the European powers being bullied, Japan never actually received the Liaodong peninsula, port Aurther was taken from them, and Russia was allowed to have railways in Manchuria. Japan was very humiliated.
3) There were a multitude of consequences that this victory had for Japan. The European power did not expect Japan to win so swiftly, and instead wanted to see both China and Japan suffer. In fear of Japan's massive gains and understanding that they could benefit from the situation, Russia, Germany, and France(knowing full well that Japan would not fight all three of them) demanded that the treaty accommodate them as well, and they ended up receiving ports and some territory. This caused tension between Japan and Europe, which furthered Japan's disdain for the West. It also fueled tensions between Japan and Russia, along with motivating Japan to industrialize more and become even more powerful.
4) 7/10. Although they got their Japanese Empire, they were humiliated by the European powers taking their riches.
