State of Palestine (15 nov 1988 anni – 4 ore 1 min, 19 giug 2025 anni)
Descrizione:
Palestine, officially the State of Palestine, is recognized by 146 UN member states and includes the Israeli-occupied West Bank (including East Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip. With over five million people, its proclaimed capital is Jerusalem, while Ramallah serves as the administrative center. The region has been a historical crossroads, witnessing centuries of rule by various empires.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict traces back to the rise of Zionism and British support during World War I, leading to Jewish immigration and tensions with the Palestinian Arab population. In 1948, the Nakba ("catastrophe") saw mass Palestinian displacement as Israel was established. In 1967, Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip, expanding settlements deemed illegal under international law. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) declared independence in 1988, and the 1993 Oslo Accords led to limited Palestinian self-governance. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 but maintains a blockade, and Hamas took control in 2007, leading to internal Palestinian divisions.
Ongoing Israeli settlement expansion, occupation, and blockades have led to severe restrictions on Palestinian movement and economic struggles. The 2023 Israel-Hamas war resulted in massive destruction and displacement in Gaza, with accusations of genocide against Israel. Key unresolved issues include borders, the status of Jerusalem, and the right of return for Palestinian refugees. Despite these challenges, Palestine maintains an emerging economy and international recognition as a non-member observer state of the UN.
