Oka Crisis (11 lugl 1990 anni – 26 sett 1990 anni)
Descrizione:
Between July 11th to September 26th 1990 an event that is Known at the Oka crisis would occur. This happened because a company wanted to make their golf course to 18 holes and build condos. The problem is that this would go onto Mohawk territory and more importantly a burial ground. The indigenous started putting up blockades to keep the police out. The police retaliate by throwing tear gas and concussion grenades. A police officer, Marcel lemay would die but no one knew how it actually happened and who was responsible for it. After this battle more blockades would pop up like the blockade on Mercier bridge which made a Fifteen minute drive to a 3 hour drive from Chateauguay to Montreal, This caused public outrage. Once the army was called in The golf course expansion was cancelled, and the land was purchased by the federal government. However, it did not establish the land as a reserve. The perspective on both sides is understandable at points in the crisis. The indigenous felt attacked and were attacked on their land and they put up defenses to keep their land that was already taken from them generations ago and it wasn't any land it was a burial ground. The public perspective is understandable because they really didn't need to be involved but they were involved when the Mercier bridge was blocked out although it was blown out of proportion. With riots they also had a reason to think that a police officer was shot even if the indigenous didn't do it.
