The trial of Socrates occurred when Meletus, a poet, had made an accusation about Socrates to a state official (archon) about impiety and corruption of the youth. Socrates was charged with both counts of impiety and corruption of the youth and was summoned to a trial by a jury. During the trial, Socrates was found guilty of both counts and was sentenced to a self-execution by a hemlock poison. Initially, Socrates and a group of meers had offered to pay the state a vast sum of money but it was Meletus who had suggested on an execution. Multiple of Socrates’ peers advised him to flee but Socrates had refused to display contempt and stay trued to his teachings of civic obedience and had commenced his self-execution.
