The Congress of Berlin (1878) was a diplomatic meeting aimed at reorganizing European affairs following the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). The major powers—Austria-Hungary, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Russia—reshaped the map of the Balkans, with the goal of stabilizing the region and preventing Russian expansion. Austria-Hungary was allowed to occupy and administer Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the Ottoman Empire's control over its European territories was reduced. The congress led to significant political tensions, especially between Russia and Austria-Hungary.
