Army Begins Full Decontamination of Reston Monkey house and Elisa Test Developed (5 dic 1989 anni – 7 dic 1989 anni)

Descrizione:

On December 5th, the Army began their full decontamination of the Reston monkey house after a second employee fell ill. The entire 91-Tangos unit of the Army was to carry out the decontamination process. Equipped with air-pressurized spacesuits and euthanasia syringes on poles, the unit was to eliminate all four hundred fifty monkeys held within the Reston monkey house. According to those in the monkey house that day, it was a reck, the monkeys had been unkept for over a day causing them to destroy everything around them in a tantrum. Additionally, the monkeys that were sick had mucus and blood poring out of their nostrils and onto the floor. The scene was chaos, the rooms were filled with people in bulky spacesuits, each with syringes, trying to handle monkeys whilst staying sanitized, which caused a few's suits to be torn open. By the end of the day, it was said that some members of the unit lost up to ten pounds from sweat during the operation.

On December 6th, the rapid Elisa Test was developed and used to test Ebola through urine and blood samples. The test was used on Milton Frantig, the second ill employee, and it came back clean. December 6th was also the most efficient day of decontamination for the Army but also was the most incidental day. At one point a monkey got loose from its cage and began to run around the building, and at another point, a monkey woke up from euthanasia and almost bit someone. Nevertheless, no one got hurt and the day ended as normal as the previous. The last of the monkeys were killed on December 7th.
