Ohio was very involved in the Civil War by contributing the third most soldiers from any state in the Union numbering over 300,000. In 1862, Ohioan General Ulysses S. Grant led the Union to its first major victory at Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River near Dover, Tennessee. The only Civil War battle fought in Ohio territory was the Battle at Buffington Island which is located on the Ohio River. This battle took place on July 19th, 1863. Ohio also had two locations to hold Confederate soldiers. These locations were at Camp Chase in Columbus and Johnsons Island on Lake Erie. Two other prominent figures that served from Ohio were future presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley. Approximately, 35,475 Ohioans died during the Civil War.
