Descrizione:
Vera Rubin's story begins in 1928 in Philadelphia, where she was born to parents working for Bell Telephone. Her father was an electrical engineer, and her mother a choir singer. After moving to Washington, DC at age ten, Rubin developed a passion for astronomy, graduating from Vassar College in 1948. In 1947, she met Bob Rubin, and they married soon after. She completed a Master's at Cornell while Bob pursued his PhD.
After Bob secured a job in Washington, Rubin gained practical experience at the Naval Research Laboratory and US Naval Observatory. She pursued a PhD at Georgetown, balancing studies and a growing family with her husband’s support. She worked with physicist George Gamow and earned her PhD in 1954, focusing on the extragalactic universe.
Rubin taught astronomy at Georgetown and later secured a research position at the Carnegie Institution. Working with Kent Ford, she developed an advanced spectrograph to study distant galaxies. Rubin's research led to the groundbreaking discovery of dark matter, revealing that galaxies contain much more invisible mass than previously thought.
