Lord Rayleigh was an English scientist who discovered noble gases, which was a significant milestone in the field of chemistry, primarily related to the identification of a new element, argon.

In 1892, Rayleigh observed that the density of nitrogen extracted from the air was always greater than the density of nitrogen released from various chemical compounds. This discrepancy (inconsistency) confused him, and he tried to look for an explanation. He started working with William Ramsay, who began investigating the possibility of an unknown gas in the air. The two scientists worked together, with Rayleigh using electrical discharges to form nitrogen oxides and Ramsay using red-hot magnesium to separate the heavier component from nitrogen.

He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904 for his successful isolation of argon, an inert atmospheric gas.
