He arranged the known elements in order of increasing atomic weight and noticed that every eighth element had similar properties. This pattern reminded him of musical octaves, where every eighth note is the same as the first. Newlands' octaves were based on the observation that elements with similar properties appeared at regular intervals in his arrangement. For example, elements 1, 8, and 15 (hydrogen, oxygen, and chlorine) were similar to each other, as were elements 2, 9, and 16 (lithium, fluorine, and sulfur). This pattern suggested a periodic relationship between the elements.
Importance: Newlands' octaves were a significant contribution to the development of the periodic table. Although his system had some limitations and was not universally accepted at the time, it provided valuable insights into the relationships between elements. Newlands' work helped to pave the way for the more comprehensive periodic table developed by Dmitri Mendeleev a few years later.
