Agony in the Garden
Giovanni Bellini (1 gen 1459 anni – 1 gen 1465 anni)
Descrizione:
- The horizon moves up, and a deep, wide landscape encloses the figures, to play an equal part
in expressing the drama of the scene → elaborately linear structure of the landscape provides
much of the expression, but an even greater part is played by the colours of the dawn, in their
full brilliance and in the reflected light within the shadow.
- Comparison between Andrea Mantegna, The Agony in the Garden, c. 1455-56, and Giovanni
Bellini, The Agony in the Garden, c. 1458-60 → Bellini is looking at Mantegna but providing
his own interpretation of the subject in a larger format
- ↳ it has been suggested that here Mantegna is indebted to Jacopo Bellini for the landscape →
Mantegna is trying to open and dilate the space which seems a response to the approach by
Bellini
- ↳Comparing these two we have the impression of a reciprocal influence → but this theory
cannot agree with the one of the 10 years age gap
- We see a very strong interchange between the two artists
- By comparing with the Jacopo Bellini, Agony in the Garden, British Museum → Giovanni is
pursuing a different path from his dad
- → drawing by Jacopo Bellini: we have the impression that both Mantegna and Bellini had
access to this repertoire of Jacopo Bellini and had access to this interpretation of these themes
→ complex relationship
