During World War II, from 1942 to 1949, over 22,000 Japanese Canadians, comprising over 90% of the total Japanese Canadian population, were forcibly relocated and incarcerated by the Canadian federal government1. This was done in the name of “national security”, and the majority of those interned were Canadian citizens by birth1. They were forced to leave their homes, primarily on the West Coast of British Columbia2, and were sent to internment camps in remote areas2. Their homes, cars, boats, and other possessions were confiscated and sold by the government23. Despite the lack of any evidence of espionage, these individuals were not allowed to return to their homes until 1949. In 1988, the federal government officially apologized for its actions and provided $21,000 in redress to each survivor23. This event is a significant part of Canada’s history, reflecting the injustices faced by Japanese Canadians during this period.
