Jordanian occupation of the west bank and east Jerusalem (1 nov 1950 anni – 1 ottob 1967 anni)

Descrizione:

The 1949 Armistice Agreements set the boundary between Israel and Jordan. In 1950, Transjordan annexed the West Bank, ruling it until 1967. This annexation was recognized only by the UK and Iraq. King Abdullah of Jordan was crowned King of Jerusalem in 1948. Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank were granted Jordanian citizenship and parliamentary representation.

Many refugees lived in camps with UNRWA assistance. Palestinian refugees made up over a third of Jordan's population. The last Jordanian elections with West Bank voters were in April 1967. The West Bank, though smaller, contained half of Jordan's agricultural land, with agriculture being a primary activity. By 1966, 43% of the labor force worked in agriculture. The Jordanian dinar became the legal tender.

Before the occupation, the West Bank contributed significantly to Jordan's GNP and agricultural output. After the 1967 occupation, the economy initially boomed. In 1967, the West Bank had a population of 585,500, with 18% being refugees. Agriculture still played a major role in its economy. During Jordanian rule, the West Bank's economy grew at an annual rate of 6-8%, which was crucial for its economic self-reliance post-war.
