1963 – After Cuban Missile Crisis
– Limited Test Ban Treaty
• Banned the testing of nuclear weapons underwater, in the atmosphere or in outer space.
• 5th August.
• Between USA, USSR and UK.
• An important first step in slowing down the arms race by controlling the development of nuclear weapons.
- Hotline
• A direct phone link between the Kremlin and the white house.
• June.
• A sign the two superpowers were improving their relationship.
• Allowed direct communication with each other so that if a crisis arose it could hopefully be solved diplomatically quicker.
1967
- Outer Space Treaty
• An agreement to not deploy nuclear weapons in space or on any other space body, or to station them in outer space. The moon was to be entirely peaceful.
• 27th January.
• Between USA, USSR and UK.
• Important as it sets out the basic legal framework for international space law. It prevented the arms race from spreading into space.
1968
- Nuclear non-proliferation Treaty (NPT)
• Agreement to stop the spread of nuclear weapons by not sharing their nuclear technology with other countries.
• 1st July.
• USA, USSR and UK.
• Stopped the superpower conflict from engulfing other parts of the planet.
