The Roaring Twenties happened because of the Republican Return to Normalcy, or a return to Gilded Age capitalism. It was marked by mostly hands-off presidents, which is why there is so little history on Warren Harding or Coolidge. In fact, Coolidge was nicknamed "Silent Cal" for his lack of involvement, who said that "the chief business of the American people is business". The laissez-faire of the time would come back to bite them. The focus on profit meant buying cars, houses, and capital on margin, which meant that banks were loaning out too much. This sort of overspeculation, paired with an undiversified economy laissez-faire would make the bubble break later; but for now, Americans enjoyed prosperity and massive culture growth.
