Causes:
1. After the first world war Germany was in deep economic depression. The allied forces who had who won the war had forced very harsh terms on Germany. Many Germans were poor and deeply unhappy which gave fuel to extreme left wing and right wing forces.
2. The failed Beer Hall Putsch was an attempt by the right wing Nazis to overthrow the state government in Munich and ultimately they take control of the whole of Germany. This partly in order to stop the forced payments to the French and the English for losing world war one.
3. The Nazis drew inspiration from the Italian leader Mussolini who had successfully marched on Rome to take power.
Effects:
1. The Beer Hall Putsch failed when thousands of Nazis marching in Munich were successfully stopped by a police cordon. The leaders tried to escape but eventually their main leader Adolf Hitler was arrested and sentenced to several years in jail.
2. The two main leaders of the failed coup that is Hitler and Ludendorff split ways after their arrest. Ludendorff blamed Hitler for escaping rather than fighting the police.
3. Hitler was treated mildly in jail and was allowed to write his infamous book Mein Kampf in which he painted his nationalistic and antisemitic ideas.
4. Hitler was released early after only nine months in jail. He then decided to gain power through democratic ways rather than by force.
5. His book ‘Mein Kampf’ served as the main source of all future Nazi propaganda.
