Gilded Age (1 gen 1870 anni – 1 gen 1900 anni)
Descrizione:
Due to the existence of markets, capital, and new business leaders, America was ready to take on a new era of industrial progress: the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age was a period defined by a rise in corporatism, unbridled capitalism, and rapid socioeconomic growth. We saw business like Carnegie Steel, pro-capitalist ideologies like Social Darwinism, and also great opposition from leaders like Eugene Debs and organizations like the AFL. The events of the Gilded Age would set up two opposing factions: those who believed in capitalism and industry, and those who supported workers rights and labor causes, which would shape the upcoming Progressive Era. The capitalism of this era would also influence the thought of post-war America and the Roaring 20s. Progress and Poverty, the work shown above, details the division between the rich and poor during the Gilded Age, and how this rate of progress is unsustainable. The Gospel of Wealth, however, argues for the necessity of wealth, and how America is better off with a wealth gap than with "universal squalor".
