Tensions had been simmering in the Saffarid court for years after the coup of 960 AD, a series of weak rulers and internal feuds had severely depleted the its strength. When the teenage Shah Kewan II took the throne at just 14 years of age after his father's unexpected death, many subjects questioned whether such a young sovereign could provide the decisive leadership required.
Into this power vacuum stepped Kewan's great-uncle, the Grand Vizier Iskandar, launched a coup, killed the Shah and proclaimed himself the new Shah of Persia. However, his tenuous claim was swiftly challenged by other royal factions, This plunged the empire into over a decade of bitter civil war.
For over seven years, Saffarid Persia tore itself apart in the civil war, losing territory and economic strength as its princes warred, and led to the emerge of Ghaznavid Dynasty. Even Shapur, the 3rd cousin once removed of Kewan II, finally united most of the realm under his iron rule in 980, the scars of the conflict remained. The Saffarids never regained their full might, and just decades later they were conquered for good by the emerging Ghaznavid Dynasty.
