CAUSES
- Benito Mussolini was a convinced antisocialist who advocated the likeliness of a dictator as the economic and political crisis was strong in Italy. In an office in Piazza San Sepolcro, Mussolini was able to gather around 200 republicans, anarchists and many more to discuss the possible establishment of a new force or party in Italian Politics.
- Mussolini was to name this group fasci di combattimento which translates to "Fighting Bands". And from there, the Fascist party had been created.
- At Rallies, Mussolini caught the eye of crowds, his physique, style and attitude were all impressive while his facts were frequently wrong and his attacks on other political parties were seen as quite malicious but his appearance and gestures were always enough to catch eyes and spread his word.
EFFECTS
- Fascist squads became popular in Italy and were terrorizing the local population. Mussolini took control of these squads and arranged for different attacks and by 1921 some parts of Italy were run by fascist squads.
-Mussolini then decided to try take power in the summer of 1922 when there was a general strike taking place. Mussolini declared that if the government didn't prevent the strike, the Fascists would. The Fascists were able to defeat the strike.
- Then with a gathering of 40,000 fascists, Mussolini said “Either the government will be given to us, or we will seize it by marching on Rome.” Mussolini refused to move and the march began.
- King Victor Emmanuel III later signed Mussolini in as President of Italy.
