The Holocaust, a genocide orchestrated by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II, resulted in the systematic murder of six million Jews across German-occupied Europe between 1941 and 1945. This decimation, which wiped out two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population, primarily involved mass shootings and poison gas in extermination camps like Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Sobibor in occupied Poland. The Nazis, driven by their racist ideology and the pursuit of "living space," came to power in 1933 and introduced anti-Jewish laws, harassment, and violence to force German Jews into emigration.

After the invasion of Poland in 1939, ghettos were established to segregate Jews, and the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union marked the start of mass shootings that claimed 1.5 to 2 million lives. By late 1941 or early 1942, Nazi leaders decided on the total extermination of Europe's Jews. Those who weren't immediately killed in extermination camps faced forced labor, starvation, abuse, and deadly medical experiments. Despite efforts to escape, Jews struggled due to the lack of resources and fear of betrayal. Most Holocaust victims died in 1942, but the killings continued at a slower pace until the war ended in 1945.

A significant number of Holocaust survivors emigrated, while a few perpetrators faced trials. Despite reparations worth billions of dollars, these fell short of compensating the massive losses endured. Museums, memorials, and cultural institutions worldwide commemorate this tragedy, which remains a symbol of ultimate human evil.
