Jackson Presidency (1 gen 1828 anni – 1 gen 1836 anni)

Descrizione:

Andrew Jackson won the Presidency in 1828 by appealing to populism, framing himself as the epitome of the common man who had risen from backwoods poverty to military glory and ultimately President. This spirit of populism helped spark a crisis in Jackson's first term which saw South Carolina ignore a federal tariff it disagreed with and threaten secession when Jackson sent in the army to enforce it, though this was prevented by compromise. In the second term Jackson vetoed the renewal of the US Bank's charter on the populist grounds that the bank favored wealthy merchants and was inherently oppressive to poorer Americans, though this veto caused near immediate economic collapse. Throughout both terms, Jackson carried out ethnic cleansing against Indigenous peoples in the southern US and supported legal action to restrict the rights of African-Americans, entrenching the Democrats' interests in White Americans and passive defense of slavery.
