In the early-fourth-century
work "Eulogies of Chin Nobles" (Chin chu-kung tsan), quoted in the Commentary of chapter 4, 12, the circumstances of P'ei Wei's writing of the "Treatise"
are set forth: "In the younger generation people like YO Ai all admired
unceremoniousness and unconventionality. P'ei Wei was distressed by the
morals of his age and by the exaltation of the principle of Nothingness (hsil-wu),
so he composed the two treatises, 'In Praise of Actuality' (Ch'ung-yu) and 'In
Honor of Non-actuality' (Kuei-wu), to refute them." pg. xxvii
