The Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918-1919 was one of the deadliest influenza outbreaks in history, infecting an estimated one-third of the world's population and resulting in at least 50 million deaths worldwide, including approximately 675,000 in the United States. The pandemic struck in several waves and was characterized by its unusually high mortality rate among young adults, overwhelming medical facilities and causing widespread social disruption.
