The Ottoman Empire, also known historically as the Turkish Empire, was an imperial power that ruled from the 14th to the early 20th centuries across Southeast Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. Originating from a small principality in Anatolia founded by Osman I in 1299, it expanded to include parts of southeastern Central Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries. The empire reached its zenith under Suleiman the Magnificent (1520–1566), governing 32 provinces and numerous vassal states with its capital at Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). Despite a period of peace in the mid-18th century that led to military stagnation, the empire underwent significant reforms and modernization in the 19th century, known as the Tanzimat period. The Ottoman Empire also played a central role in the politics of the Middle East and Europe for six centuries until its decline and eventual dissolution following World War I, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.
