He was born in 1147 and died in the year 1199. He gained political dominance through military success and political adroitness.

His parents were Minamoto no Yoshitomo and Yuragozen. His spose was Hojo Masako and his children were Minamoto no Sanetomo, Minamoto no Yoriie, Jogyo, and Sanman.

There was a power struggle following his death and the family of Yoritomo's widow, the Hojo, emerged victorious.

Yoritomo was once presented with the head of an enemy by a samurai who had sworn loyalty to the dead enemy. The founder of the Kamakura government had the samurai executed for disloyalty.

His Buddhist name was Ogosho Atsushi Dai Zenmon.
