Edo Period (1 gen 1603 anni – 1 gen 1868 anni)

Descrizione:

During the Edo period, domestic trade and agricultural production continued to improve.

A strict four class system existed. At the top stood the samurai, followed by the peasants, artisians, and merchants. None were allowed to change their social status. People with professions that were considered impure formed a fifth class.

New art forms like kabuki and ukiyo-e became very popular, especially among the townspeople.

Kabuki is a traditional form a theater which involves elaborately designed costumes, eye-catching makeup, outlandish wigs, and exaggerated actions performed by the actors. Originally it was performed only by women, but later a restriction placed by the Tokugawa Shogunate forbid women from participating.

Ukiyo-e are Japanese woodblock prints which depicted popular geisha, sumo wrestlers, and Kubuki actors. Ukiyo-e, literally "paintings of the floating world", were named so because their subjects were associated with detachment from ordinary life.
