Drawing of Burning of Idols (1 gen 1581 anni – 1 gen 1584 anni)

Descrizione:

The “Burning of Idols” is an ink drawing taken from the “Description of the City and Province of Tlaxcala,” colonial manuscript from the late 16th century. According to Dr. Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank, the manuscript was an important source that discussed the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 1521. The text was written in three sections, with the initial section being written between 1581-84 by Diego Muñoz Camargo, a Tlaxcala mestizo born to a Spanish conquistador father and Indigenous mother. The “Burning of Idols” depicts two Franciscan friars holding torches to a pile of Mexica idols, demonstrating the “expatriation campaigns” of New Spain, or the Evangelizing practice of burning or destroying objects related to Indigenous religion and knowledge. Around the friars are Tlaxcalan boys with kindling for the fire, reflecting the unwilful participation of Indigenous peoples in the destruction of their own religious symbols to uphold the Christian belief of rejecting idolatry. There is a complicated depiction in the “Burning of Idols,” as Indigenous knowledge is burned in favour of Christianity. Nevertheless, this highlights the incredible resilience of Indigenous peoples in the fact of trauma imposed by colonial officials.
