Created during the reign of Moctezuma II (1502–20), the Sun Stone is an unfinished monolith with a 12ft diameter and weighs 54,210 lbs. The Sun Stone records the origins of the cosmos, including the creation of various eras (or suns), the history of previous eras, the cardinal directions, the length of a century (52 years) and what will bring the end of an era (The Sun Stone, Smarthistory). Upon discovery by Spanish conquistadors, it was buried in the Zócalo, the main plaza of Mexico City. In 1790, it was rediscovered during repairs on the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City.
