Arrière-petit-fils d'Edmond de Langley, quatrième fils d'Édouard III, et descendant par sa grand-mère paternelle de Lionel d'Anvers, deuxième fils d'Édouard III. Sacré le 28 juin 1461 par l'archevêque de Cantorbéry Thomas Bourchier. S'enfuit d'Angleterre après la rébellion du comte de Warwick.
