Between February 19 and March 26, 1945, the United States and Japan engaged in the Battle of Iwo Jima. The battle took place in the Pacific Campaign of World War 2 and finished with the U.S. being victorious and gaining control of both the island and the Japanese airfields located at that location. Despite being kept hidden at the time, the island's real strategic relevance lay in its use as a backup or emergency landing area for B-29 bombers that would ultimately carry the atomic bomb and attack Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The hoisting of the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi is one of history's most widely reproduced photos and is considered the most iconic representation of the war. In its 36 days of combat on Iwo Jima, the V Amphibious Corps killed approximately 22,000 Japanese soldiers and sailors.
