The US became the first and only nation to use a nuclear bomb in war when they dropped two nuclear bombs in Japan, on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The US had been working on the technology to build a nuclear bomb since 1940, when they heard that other Nazi Germany had already started research. By the time they built the bomb successfully, Germany had already been defeated, but the war in Japan was still raging on. Truman was told that there would be far more casualties if they conducted a land invasion, so he opted to drop the nuclear bombs, ending WWII. The first bomb killed about 80,000 people, and the second about 40,000 more. A few days later, Japan surrendered.
