Syro-Ephraimite War (1 gen 736 anni a. C. – 1 gen 732 anni a. C.)
Descrizione:
The Syro-Ephraimite War occurred in the 8th century BC when the Neo-Assyrian Empire was at its peak. Aram-Damascus (Aram) and the Kingdom of Israel sought to break away from Assyrian control. King Ahaz of Judah, however, refused to join the coalition.
In 735 BC, Rezin of Aram-Damascus and Pekah of Israel invaded Judah in an attempt to depose Ahaz. The invasion resulted in heavy losses for Judah, with 120,000 troops killed and many officials, including Ahaz's son Maaseiah, slain or taken captive. Although Jerusalem was besieged, it was not captured.
Facing defeat, Ahaz sought assistance from Tiglath-Pileser III of Assyria. The Assyrians intervened, defeating Israel, Aram-Damascus, and the Philistines. However, the alliance with Assyria brought new challenges for Ahaz, as he had to pay tribute and build idols of Assyrian gods in Judah to appease his new ally.
