Leonin (50-01), Perotin (60-30), & Notre Dame START ARS ANTIQUA START ARS ANTIQUA START ARS ANTIQUA START ARS ANTIQUA START ARS ANTIQUA (1 gen 1150 anni – 1 gen 1250 anni)

Descrizione:

In this century, Notre Dame in Paris became a huge on for polyphonic music. Composers worked together in a close group, and established the new rules of polyphony through organum, and attempted to develop a system for notating rhythm (the rhythmic modes). Composers belonging to this environment were of the Notre Dame school. They worked in both discant (together) and florid (fast voice over slow voice) polyphony.

The two most notable composers of the period were Perotin and his mentor, Leonin.

Leonin worked mostly with two voice roganum, and wrote The Magnus Liber Organi (great book of organum.) Several reproductions survive, many of which feature additions from later composers, something that was common amongst the Notre Dame School. (think Clausula and substitute Clasula)

Perotin, on the other hand, worked extensivley with four voices and edited the magnus liber. Both Leonin and Perotin made arrangements of the Christmas Day mass "Vidurent Omnes." Leonins was two voices, whereas perotins much more elaborate and had four voices.
