Charlemagne, as king of the Carolingians in modern France, wanted a great empire similar to the Romans, and realized to do so that he would need something to unite his populace and would need well-educated advisors. He heavily encouraged education among the nobility and sought to use religion as way to unite his new kingdom, and he wanted his religion standardized in order to do this. Standardizing religion, also came with the challenge of standardizing text and music.

Charlemagne was a great investor and supporter of the arts and worked closely with the pope during his time period, both things that helped foster a musical culture in the region. He continued to spread and enforce Gregorian chant in the footsteps of his predecesro pepin the short
