The mission of this expedition was to find the sources of the Red and Arkansas Rivers. This expedition produced more information than any other military expedition. Major Stephan H. Long led this expedition along with Captain John R. Bell. Major Long led a group West through Omaha along the Platte River, and through the Rockey Mountains. They eventually turned South to find the sources of the rivers. Eventually, they split up into two groups, one following the Red River, and the other following the Arkansas River. After a while, Long found out that they were not following the Red River, but instead were following the Canadian River.
